Researchers estimate that Poverty Point was shaped in 90 days without the use of wheelbarrows using nothing more than a bucket brigade. Estimates that 10,000 people may have lived and worked in the swampy area.
What brought this people to this place and why the location and the rush to build. Other mounds further up the river took years to build their mounds. While these other mounds were building palisades or looked for defensive locations Poverty Point is planned out differently. The question remains why did such a large group gather to accomplish such a grand feat.
I have not personally been to this site. One of the many sites that still await on my to do list. However, as I research longer and deeper into the stories of these mounds, I hope to be able to share more of the history of this and other mounds.
